Next Monday-Wednesday, Oct. 8-10, our pre-school and first grade teachers, Mrs. Marisol and Ms. Caroline, will be in Escazu at the CDS campus attending a very important teacher workshop on literacy given by two professors from Boston University. This is a great opportunity for these teachers to get some current information and ideas for your children's classes and to interact with the Escazu campus teachers. Our assistant teacher will be in charge of the pre-k and Kinder classes on these days, and we will have a substitute teacher in prep/first grade for the three days.

Remember that Monday, Oct. 15 is a legal holiday in Costa Rica and we will have no school that day.

The PSAT will be given to all students in grades 9, 10, and 11 on Wednesday, October 17. We use this as the major standardized test in high school each year to help us monitor student achievement. It is also a good predictor for how students will do on the SAT in grades 11 and 12 as they apply to universities. We will have a normal school day that Wednesday. The test will be administered between 7:30 and 10:45.
-
The first quarter ends on Friday, Oct. 12. Report cards for all students go home on Thursday, Oct. 18.
-
Friday, Oct. 19 is a half day with noon dismissal for all students. Pickup and buses at 12:15. We will have parent conferences from 12:30 until 3:00. Elementary teachers will phone you to set appointments. In grades 7-12, you should call my secretary Marie Luisa and set up an appointment with a teacher if you think it would be helpful. Conferences are optional in the upper grades, depending on the wishes of the parents.

Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 16 and 17, four representatives from the U.S. Department of Defense will be on campus evaluating our academic and boarding program. If approved, they will list us as an approved school to receive boarding students in high school from Dept. of Defense families stationed in Latin America. They will not only be looking at academics in the high school but school security, which will be very helpful to us in terms of recommendations.

Saturday, November 3 we will give the SAT on our campus to students who register for it.
-
Upper school (7-12) will be having a Halloween themed dance at the end of October or early November off campus. Date is still pending because of the basketball trip and SAT. More information will follow from the student government association.

If any of you are willing to be substitute teachers when a teacher is sick or away, please call us and give your name to the secretary. We have recently had trouble finding good subs when teachers are sick!

I will be out of the country next week attending a regional conference for school directors in Mexico. Contact persons/head teachers while I am away are Kim Baldwin in upper school and Lucia Alcantara in lower school. If issues or questions arise, feel free to contact them or your child's teacher. I will be checking my e-mail while traveling.
