Talk Like A Pirate day!

September 19this Talk Like a Pirate Day and since we are the country day School Pirates, have fun and don’t forget to say Aaargh!

School Spirit

It’s the end of week number 5 and school spirit is alive and well in the upper school today. The girls’ basketball team is earning money for their trip to Panama by hiring themselves out to the highest bidder to be someone’s personal assistant (OK, maid) for the day. The girls are carrying books, taking notes, and sometimes carrying boys across puddles. They are also dressed funny, and by press time they were looking funnier by the minute. Magic marker makeup, silly clothes and wearing signs extolling the super powers of their owners. I think it is very brave of the boys who have purchased the right this week, as they will be on the receiving end of the game next week when they will also serve as personal butlers for the girls. Of course the money raised is all for a good cause and it’s a great opportunity to show some school spirit by supporting our athletes.

CDSG ART

By the way. Have you noticed the beautiful murals outside of the art room in the elementary building? And for that matter, have you noticed the beautiful artwork going on inside the art classroom? If not, you should stop by and peek in. We’re really lucky to have Susie Katus with us this year and teaching art. The kids are producing some beautiful work.

Bingo and Boosters

I heard that Bingo Night at Wild’s restaurant was also very successful and the games brought in over $400 for our teams. Thank you to our boosters who are helping to plan and support these events. Also, a big thank you to all of those who have offered prizes for events! The trip to Panama will be one of the highlights of these students high school experience. It is fantastic that our parents are so supportive.

Progress Reports

Progress reports are being mailed out today for students that may be falling behind in their class work and/or their grades are lower than expected. If you receive a progress report please take it as a serious warning to encourage your child to work a little harder. Progress reports are meant to keep you informed about the progress (or lack of it) so that quarterly report cards are not full of surprises. High school students should be especially concerned as grades now will be entered on transcripts that will be viewed by colleges and universities during the application process during their senior years. Don’t fall too far behind!

Next Week’s Ostional Field Trip

Next week will be the Baldwin’s annual field trip to see the Leatherback turtles laying their eggs on the beaches of Ositonal. This is an exciting time, but we may not be notified until the last minute. So those students planning to go should keep their toothbrushes packed because the call will only come the day before you leave (whenever that is). The trip will be overnight because the group will arrive at a drop off point and then have to hike several miles in to the place where the turtles come to nest. The students will stay the night and then go to the beach at sunrise. Mr. Baldwin claims that’s the best time to see them. It’s also prime surfing time isn’t it Dan? Coincidence? It will be a great trip and I hope to sneak off with them as an extra chaperone, and student.

High School Dance Tonight

And of course, don’t forget the school dance tonight at the Playa Conchal Resort. The resort is always supportive of our events, as they were for the Independence Day celebration last Friday when they supplied tables, chairs and tents. This time they are opening the doors of their new conference center where the students will present the evening as a red carpet affair.

CEPIA Event

I’d also like to remind you of the anniversary celebration and party that will take place this Saturday at the CEPIA center in Huacas. We are proud of our support and affiliation with this local charitable organization that provide educational, family, social and psychological services to the needier families in our area. Children and families from all over our area are benefitting from the services of this great non-profit organization. Please come to the party to see what CEPIA does and meet many of the people that they support. If you would like to know more about CEPIA or how you can contribute to their programs, visit their website at www.cepiacostarica.org .

Enjoy your weekend, hug your kids, smile, and say Aaaargh! at least once to an unsuspecting stranger.
