CDS Weekly News #6

September 26, 2008

Well, it has just been another fantastic week at Country day. Our kids are amazing, of course. This week we had our first all school awards ceremony for our outstanding students of the month for September. We will have these assemblies the last Friday of every month, or sometimes the first Friday. It is a special day to recognize outstanding achievements in academics and personal conduct. We have one student of the month for each grade, upper and lower school art, and also for beginning, intermediate and advanced Spanish. It’s a chance reinforce the kind of behaviors in and out of the classroom that we expect from all of our students at Country Day. We strive everyday to highlight and reward students going the extra mile and helping to make our school the best it can be. It is important that our students know that these things do not go unnoticed and we will encourage them to keep up the good work all year. It was also great to hear all of our students cheering for each other as they received their awards and had their pictures taken for our wall of fame.

Don’t Forget the Spaghetti Dinner/Fashion Show/Movie Night Tonight!

The fun never stops at CDSG. Tonight will be a spaghetti dinner followed by a fashion show and the basketball movie “Glory Road”. It will be a fun time for all and the money raised will go to support our basketball team as they prepare for the big AASCA basketball tournament in Panama in two weeks. Please come and enjoy a good time and show your school spirit. The fun starts around 6:30.

CDSG Aid to the Community:

This past week two families lost their home in a tragic fire in Cartegena. The owners of the house lived on the bottom floor and were able to save a few things, but the renting family with a 3 year old lost almost everything as they had to flee. The fire began on the top floor. We are going to have a place to accept donations for the families in our office for the next few weeks. Diapers, food, and clothing will be appreciated. They are also trying to find a way to collected wood and roofing materials. For more information you can contact Walter Vargas at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it I know that we are a generous community with many resources at our disposal. I am happy to give our school and our students and their families the opportunity to give back a little bit to this beautiful country and the people in the area that make it such a special place for us to live.

5th Grade Science Presentation:

After the big assembly all of the students in the elementary (grades PK-3 to 6th) went back to the rancho on the elementary side to have another special assembly presented by the 5th grade scientists. They are lucky enough to have two teachers in their class for the first part of this school year with not only the lead teacher Ms. Allison, but also a very talented student teacher, Mr. Isaiah. Mr. Isaiah was excited and a little nervous after weeks of work memorizing a fun song about cells and their structure, but the students were great. They had all of the elementary students’ attention the entire time and drew a load round of applause at the end. Of course the loud applause might have been more in anticipation of the incredible treats the 5th graders had put together for the second half of their presentation, cakes, jello, pies and fruits all assembled together in the forms of cells. The scientists each took a different grade level to an area of the rancho to show and explain the parts of a cell while the onlookers tried not to drool over the treats that they new awaited them at the end of the lesson. It was a really creative lesson that was a great success Congratulation to everyone in grade 5!

National Honor Society News:

Congratulations to the new NHS members, Jessi Curtis, Christiana Kittel, Walter Augustine, Jeremy Atkin, Jacob Dole. They were selected based on high academic achievement, involvement in community service projects and leadership ability. It’s a real honor to be chosen.
The NHS induction ceremony will be later this semester.

Important SAT Reminder:

The first SAT of the academic year is this Saturday, October 4th here on campus. Students will report to Kim Baldwin’s room at 8:00 sharp. It is important that those students get a good night’s rest and a good breakfast the morning of the test.

Edline: (A note from Rodgers H. Bestgen Jr., our IT Man)

Edline is an online community designed to bring parents teachers and educators together. For teachers it is a tool for grading, assigning homework, and generally presenting their curricula and teaching philosophy to the parent student body.  For parents it is a way to stay in touch with their child’s education.  It is easy to monitor assignments, tests, and bi-weekly progress reports which includes grades for the various assignments to date.  For students Edline is a tool for reviewing assignments, test dates, and generally keeping up with class planning. The final and most important feature of Edline is paperless report cards. The Country Day School will be posting quarterly report cards to the Edline system. Grading is currently available only for grades Three through Twelve. Pre-Kinder through grade 2 will use the Edline system for communicating with parents and online skills based report cards should be available to parents by the end of the first quarter.  Thank You for your time and please do join us at www.edline.net .

Important Reminder: If you still have not picked up your Edline password please come by the office or call Katia and she will give you your parent number and the number for your child to use to access the site. You child cannot access important information without you asking for it. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Have a great weekend and enjoy the sunshine while the rains wait for October.
