Happy Halloween to everyone! We had a special all school assembly this morning to celebrate and honor Dia de los Muertos. Our Spanish teachers and students worked very hard in preparation for the event. They should be very proud of their accomplishments. We should give a big hand to Monica, Walter, and Roxana for organizing this wonderful event.

Of course we have all kinds of activities planned for this evening including trick-or-treating, a haunted house, face painting, bobbing for apples and other fun and scary things for the whole school from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Then we'll have a Halloween Dance for the upper school immediately following from 8:30 to 11:00. I hope to see all of you here in costume with your children.

The weather has turned for the drier it appears and we have had some beautiful days already. The fish are coming in close to the shore it seems as I've watched men and boys out in the surf flinging lures out at them. Don't be surprised if you see me walking the beach as well, casting  a big fly trying to snare some of those fish. This is truly a beautiful time of year and getting better every day. Go out and enjoy the evening and the weekend con su familia.
Baseball is Coming Soon to Brasilito!
Baseball/Softball Update (Grades 2 through 5)

We can thank Craig Macktinger and Mike Osborne, co-owners of The Happy Snapper in Brasilito for offering the Country Day School Pirates use of the baseball field behind their restaurant for baseball games and practices on Saturday mornings. It was very generous of them and we appreciate it tremendously. I know where I'll be having my shrimp and avocado salads on Saturday afternoons from now on. Thank you Mike and Craig!

Our first after school activity baseball/softball practice will take place on Tuesday, November 4, from 2:30 to 3:45, and every Tuesday thereafter. Saturday games/practices will start the following Saturday, November 8. There is no sign up sheet, just show up on Tuesday with your glove if you want to play. It will be a little disorganized at first as we see how many players we have and what levels they are at. Beginners are definitely encouraged to come out and learn how to play! Boys and girls are welcome to play. This will not be too competitive. I simply want to emphasize fun and learning the fundamentals of the game. We will practice fielding ground balls, catching fly balls, base running, and hitting. Please come join the fun.
Every Weekend is an Opportunity for Fun!
Boarding field trips for Non Boarding Students

Remember: All weekend field trips by our boarding students are open to all of our students at CDSG from grades 8-12 for a set fee. This includes local kayaking, boating, snorkeling and other activities as well as our extended trips to caves, white water rafting, volcanoes, waterfalls, and many other exciting trips. I will keep you up to date (in the near future all the years planned activities will be included on our school calendar and website) by announcing the events far enough in advance for you to plan for your child to attend. It's a great way to let the kids get out and explore Costa Rica while you have a quiet weekend at home :)
Halloween Fundraiser in Brasilito Anoche
In addition to CDS baseball games starting soon at the Happy Snapper ball field in Brasilto, there is also an important fundraiser disguised as a Halloween party. tonight at the restaurant. The money raised will go toward building an office for a new police station in Flamingo. I've only lived here a short time, but I think we all know how important this is for helping to reduce the amount of theft in that area. So go out tonight and enjoy some good music, food and drinks in some good company, and be sure to thank Mike and Craig for supporting our school!

Elementary SGA Comes to CDSG!
Hooray!  It is Time for SGA Elections!

A meeting was held yesterday to discuss our Lower School Student Government.  All interested students were in attendance. Elections for Country Day School Student Elections in the Lower School will be held next Friday, November 7th.  If your child is in 5th grade, he/she may run for the position of Secretary or Treasurer.  If your child is in 6th grade, he/she may run for the position of President or Vice President.  First through Fourth graders may run for Class Representative.
All students interested in running should make their campaign buttons, posters, bracelets, etc., this weekend.  There is only one week to campaign so parents, encourage your children to get started!  Have fun and be creative!!! Speeches for positions of President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer will be held next Friday, November 7th with voting to take place afterwards.  Winners will be announced at the end of the day on Friday.
Students running for Class Representative positions will not need to make speeches but should campaign by creating posters, buttons, etc., and by talking to their fellow classmates and explaining why they would make great Class Representatives.
Some activities and fun ideas were discussed at our meeting including:
·         Recycling program
·         Community service
·         Bake sales and fund raisers
·         Field Day
·         Christmas Grams
·         Valentine card distribution
·         Easter Egg Hunt
·         Movie Nights
It should be a fun and exciting year in the Lower School.  We are pleased with the enthusiasm so far from those students interested in running. If you have any questions, please contact Allie Davidow or Sarah Haun.

Thank you!

Mano a Mano
Mano a Mano (Hand in Hand)

Mano en Mano is a new community service group that has been started at Country Day School!  The purpose of this group is to locate families in need in our area and HELP!  We encourage students, teachers and parents to join in.  Our first meeting will be at 11:30, Thursday, November 6th.  Please join us if you are interested.  If you are interested and can't make it, please let Jamie (library) or Sarah (Prepa/Grade 1), know and they will add you to the list of members.

The first project this group will organize is a Thanksgiving Feast for a local blind family.  Students will chose feathers from a paper turkey and on each feather will be a food product, (rice, beans, canned food, spaghetti, sauce, etc.)  Students will bring in these items on a specific day before Thanksgiving and we will create a huge food basket to give to this particular family. Imagine what a big basket of food we can provide for this family if our entire school community participates! By doing this, we will teach the true meaning of Thanksgiving while helping others in need.

More about the family we will support with this project will appear in the next edition of the Weekly News.
THANK YOU PARENTS!

I'd like to say a special thank you to Susan Curtis, Midge Menking, Petra Shoep, Donna Osborne, Diane Leonal, Carol Ferguson, and Jerry Hirsch who volunteer to meet with me each month to discuss issues concerning the school and hear my reports on current events. But I have to also point out that I have been receiving many very positive comments about our school lately. As with any school in any part of the world we are a continual work in progress. School curriculum needs to be continuously evaluated and updated, teaching methodologies should be continuously evaluated and aligned with current with best practices, adapting to our students needs throughout the year, and our overall program needs to be evaluated to be sure we are meeting the needs of our families as our population changes each year. We should be confident enough in ourselves and our mission and vision to reach all of our students, that we are not afraid to honestly and openly assess what we do, how we do it, and decide what we do well and where we need to improve. Having so many supportive and dedicated parents in our school only makes it easier for our staff to work hard in support of your children. Thank you for a great first ten weeks!
