Now that November has arrived we're all hoping that our local family businesses will grow busier by the day. Hopefully finally reaching a conclusion to the two year long election cycle in the United States will prove to have a positive impact on the world economy and we will begin to feel a bit less volatility and a lot more stability in the economy and political systems around the world. Whatever our political views we must admit that Tuesday's election was an historical event. I visited classrooms the following morning and the previous night's events dominated the classroom discussions. The students were full of questions and teachers were talking about future history textbooks would devote entire sections to this election. It is exciting when current events can be brought immediately to the classroom to bring to life past history made before our children were born. I do know that all of us hope and pray that this is an opportunity for collaboration and prosperity in the future for our children and generations to come. We live in an exciting time and even our kids can sense that.

Elementary SGA Elections
|
|
Speaking of elections, we had one of our own this week. I think I prefer a weeklong campaign as opposed to over one hundred weeks! Our elementary students held elections on Friday with the fifth and sixth graders giving speeches to the student body trying to rally votes for votes. One of the funniest lines came from one of the sixth grade students running for president when he said he promised not to invade or wage war with any of the local schools, but would instead seek to build alliances. Our kids are smarter than we think. I'm excited that we had so many students interested in running for office and getting involved in developing policy and finding ways to improve their school. As one student said in her speech, "CDSG is our second home! We should make it the best!." I'm glad she feels that way. We all should.

| Students of the Month |
|
In keeping with our monthly tradition of celebrating our students academic and personal achievements we also held our all school assembly held on the first Monday of every month and celebrating our Students of the Month. Teachers in the upper and lower school all picked students who have exhibited outstanding academic achievement and even more importantly displayed virtues such as kindness, patience and acceptance towards their fellow classmates. If you haven't been to one of these assemblies you should plan to attend at least one this year. Once you see and hear the cheers from students as each of the names are announced you can really feel the bond and the beginning of the positive school culture and pride in community that our staff is building and encouraging in their classrooms and in all the events we put on throughout the year. You should be proud of what your children are accomplishing.

| Halloween Party |
|
And speaking of school events, we had a very successful Halloween party and dance at school last Friday. I don't think even one elementary parent stayed home, but instead came out and took advantage of a fun opportunity to take the kids around trick or treating to all of the classrooms in the elementary building and the watching them participate in all of the fun activities put together by the upper school student council and other in order to help raise funds for the high school student trip to Washington D.C. later in the spring. The money raised goes to a good cause and it gave us yet another opportunity to come together as a community to enjoy each other's company and give our children another chance to be together as friends.

| New School Calendars Are Ready! |
|
In an effort to help you to plan for many of our school's events throughout the year we have put together a school calendar with all of the events planned so far. It is our plan that next year's calendar will have everything on it before thestart of the school year. This year's calendar will have most events, but I'm sure more will be added and we'll inform you as far in advance of those as we can. For now however, take the calendars, (in the office and sent home with you children), hang them up at home, plan your calendar so that you can attend every event, and brag to all of your friends about how much we do here at Country Day.

Don't forget that baseball will begin on Saturday mornings from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. in Brasilito in the field behind the Happy Snapper. We had our first after school practice on Tuesday and it was fantastic! We have some good ball players. But where were the girls? Come on girls, I know there are some super girls out there who should be out playing. The bottom line is that we had a lot of fun and laughed and ran and threw and hit the baseball in freshly mowed green grass...ahhh. It just doesn't get any better than that. I hope to see more kids out on Saturdays. ALL AGES WELCOME. We've got enough equipment and spact to have a couple of groups playing. Play ball!
Late note: We had 15 players come out last Saturday and we had so much fun! Please come join us next week.
If you're interested CDSG teachers are interested in forming a softball team for next week at Snapper Field at 11:00. Coed teams from Tamarindo and Portrero will be coming to play as well. If you'd like to join us tell me or Gaylord. It should be aa lot of fun and we have all of the equipment.

| Pirate Futbol |
|
Wow! There was an exciting game of futbol on our pitch this past Wednesday. We had our first games against a local school and the competition was fierce and fun. It was great to see how many parents came out, along with all of the rest of the elementary students to cheer on our teams of elementary students. Thanks to the coaches and referees as well for outing on a great morning of fun and exciting competition for our kids. Anyone who has some good pictures of the games please send them to me to put in our yearbook files and to add to our newsletter next week. Go pirates!

| Open House On Thursday |
|
We will have our first annual open house for prospective parents, real estate agents, and land developers on Thursday next week. It is our way of educating them about all that CDSG has to offer families with school age children planning to relocate, either short or long term, to Guanacaste. We want them to be able to tell people that they have seen our campus, heard personal stories from parents about their children's success here, and heard from the director exactly what our academic and extracurricular programs offer. If you would like to attend and enjoy some wine and cheese and help me inform agents and developers or prospective parents about our school, please feel free to join us at 4:00 on Thursday next to the pool. By the way, while I was visiting and passing out invitations to these people on Wednesday and Thursday I met some really nice folks. Many of them were parents of graduates or current students and all had really nice things to say about our school. I really enjoyed myself and felt lie I made some new friends. It should be a really nice time on Thursday.

| Tamarindo Beach and CDSG Recycling |
| In our continuing effort to support recycling and be environmentally conscious I'd like to remind you about two things we are involved in and support. The Tamarindo Beach cleanup will continue this weekend from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in Tamarindo. Please come if you can to help cleanup and recycle items. You may bring recyclable materials and also help sort recyclable materials that people bring in before they are taken away. Also we have our own recycling bins at school behind the cafetorium. The bins are clearly marked. We will be recycling school supplies, left over lunch and cafeteria items, and you are free to bring items from home (but please don't send them to school on the bus!). Go green! Note: I realize this newsletter came out too late to inform you about the Tamarindo Beach recycling this past weekend, but remember to look for the December date next month. |
| New Families Visiting |
|
I guess you all are spreading the word about how great our school is because I am getting more and more requests from new families to visit our school and enroll their children. Four different families have visited me this week and began filling out applications and enrollment agreements. Every one of those families has said that they are hearing nothing but great things about the school from families in the area. Thank you for spreading the good word. It's good for the school and good for the community. We are a small school of about a150 students now, but it wouldn't hurt us to grow to closer to 200 in order to provide our students a little more opportunities in sports and extracurricular activities and also allow us to explore the option of hiring more specialist teachers. In the mean time keep spreading the good word.

| Remember To Wear Your Uniforms.... |
|
This is a reminder that it is a school rule that students wear their school uniforms to school everyday, unless they have a parent note signed with the reason for not having a uniform that day. We want to keep up the image of our school and wearing the CDSG uniform is a requirement. When our students come to school wearing other clothing it looks sloppy and it undermines our ability to enforce all of our school rules. We are not too rigid but we do expect everyone to adhere to our policies. If they know we are serious about the small things, they will respect our rules about the more important things. If students show up out of uniform they may be asked to remain in the school office until a parent can bring the proper uniform or until a parent can be contacted and excused due to extraordinary circumstances. Thank you for your cooperation.
