Director's Corner
2009 continues to show promises of even greater things to come for Country Day School in Guanacaste. And I hope it's a sign of good things to come for the entire area. We are continuing to welcome new students and we may have to turn people away before long because we're getting too crowded in some our grade levels. We're searching for more desks and moving one class to a larger room to accomodate the rising numbers. I have many new families signing up for next year already and five families scheduled to arrive between now and the middle of March to visit the school with their kids and look for housing in preparation for their moves in August. The emails come everyday asking about the area and CDSG in particular. That's why I asked last week for families who wouldn't mind answering questions from families planning to move here. I can hardly keep up with them all. I want to write back to all of them and tell them all about Guanacaste and CDSG, but I'd be at my computer answering emails most of the day. So I'd appreciate the help. I've had a few volunteers already and I thank you.

New Parking Lot News: Please Read
Please be aware of some changes to our system regarding picking up students after school on the elementary side of the campus. I am becoming increasingly concerned for our students' safety during the time that they're are getting onto the busses or waiting for their parents to arrive. In an effort to increase safety and reduce the risk of accidents, we will close the gates at the far end of the elementary building in front of the busses and require that students wait in the fenced in waiting area in front of the office until a parent or guardian comes to the area to retrieve them. With cars and trucks driving alongside the busses and children running out to the parking lot that area is just too dangerous. Please do not stop at the crosswalk (world's largest speed bump) and call to your child. They have been told to wait in the waiting area until you come to pick them up. This reduces the risk of accident and assures us that the children are going home with their parents. The school is growing and with so many new faces it will take us a little bit of time to get to know all of you. Also, if you have a change in plans and want to have your child picked up by a friend or family member who does not normally pick up your child, please call Katia in the school office and let her know. She will inform the teachers on after school duty. This is very important! Don't just assume that your child will be permitted to go home with another person. We need your permission (phone call or note) in order to let your child go home with someone other than you! Thank you so much for your cooperation. It's all in the best interest of our kids!

Beach Chalenge Volunteers Needed!
Those of you who have been a part of the CDSG community for a while know what a great event our Annual Beach Challenge is, and how important it has become to our community. It is an integral part of our school. For those of you who are new and don't know about the Beach Challenge, you are in for a real treat this April 25th. This event will take place on the beach in Potrero and will include lots of sporting activities and contests for the whole family. It also raises money for local charities and for sports equipment for CDSG. How can you help? We need volunteers to approach businesses in the community to purchase advertising space on our Beach Challenge T-Shirt and on pages in our yearbook. We need someone from each community. If you would like to help us find sponsors please contact me or Jerry Hirsch. Jerry has been kind enough to volunteer many hours of his time over the past couple of years putting this together. It would be nice to have some new people step in and volunteer a few hours in order to assure that this event takes place. This has always been a parent project. I would like to thank Andy Kittel and Kristi Akin for their early support of the project.

Movie Night
As a way of saying "Thank You" to all of our elementary students for all of the support they (and you) have shown to their fundraisers the elementary Student Government Association had a movie night on Friday night. It was a lot of fun and we are thinking about doing more of these in the future! Let us know if you think it is a good idea!

Rafting Trip on Valentine's Weekend The dorm students are going on a three day trip from February 13 to 16. They will leave Friday after school and return on Sunday. They will have two spate rafting trips on this weekend adventure. The trip is available for upper school students at a cost of approximately $350 per person. This includes transportation, lodging, meals, 2 days rafting, and canopy tours. There is limited space available and spots will be filled on a first come first served basis. Our boarding students do a lot of fun trips. We thought it would be nice to give the same opportunity for some adventurous weekends. Come along and have some fun!

After School Activites Begin!
This semester's after school activities rock! We have such a great line-up of activites there is no reason that your son or daughter has to complain about having nothing to do after school. We have swimming, tennis, basketball, soccer, football, and baseball for all ages and even swimming, yoga and cheerleading for the tiniest tots. The teachers have all stepped up to offer their time free of charge for these extra activities so be sure to show your appreciation. Where else in the area can you find so many opportunities for your children to express themselves and be exposed to so many different cultural, academic, sports, leadership, and social opportunities? Only at CDS Guanacaste, that's where.

SLP Corner If parents have speech/language/academic concerns about their child, then parents should notify classroom teachers and/or myself. I think that's how it's working, and it's working well. If a teacher has concerns about a student, parents should be notified before I am in contact with the parents - - I think that's how it's working, and it's working well too!.
Thank you, Tara
