Director's Corner

This Friday will be very exciting as we invite the community to come and celebrate Costa Rica's Independence Day. We will be busy all week preparing for Friday's event which may turn out to be the biggest event CDSG has ever hosted. All local and private schools have been invited to join us. We plan to have all of the following:

Live Music!

Dancing!
DJ MeMe!
Art exhibits!
Game Booths!
Raffle for Great Prizes!
Mechanical Bull!
Huge Inflatable Slide!
Horse Rides!
and...Lots of Food!

If you are a business owner and would like to advertise your business at this event, table space is $10.00. If you are a business owner that would like to sell items at this event, table space is $20.00.

All proceeds from raffle tickets, table space, and rides will go towards supporting our students' participation in events put on by the Association for American Schools in Central America. Our students are hoping to attend soccer and basketball tournaments as well as the leadership conference and Knowledge Bowl. These are great opportunities for our kids and we want to do all we can to help them. Thanks to the CDSG Booster Club for all their support. We're looking forward to a great year full of stimulating and rewarding activities for all of our students. Please help us get the word out to everyone so that we can have a huge turnout!

Mano a Mano Needs Your Help!

Last year at CDSG we started an activity called, "Mano a Mano" or "Hand in Hand". Mano a Mano is a volunteer, community service organization which, together with CEPIA, (a local community service group that serves children in our area who live at or below the poverty level), CDSG parents, students and teachers will work towards the betterment of our community.  Some possible activities will include:
·         Partnering with a sister school in Huacas or Brasilito
o   Sharing ideas
o   Attending one another's celebrations and programs
o   Helping with building upkeep and maintenance
o   Building friendships between children of each school
·         Beach clean ups
·         Yard sales to benefit others
·         Read-a-thon to raise money for CEPIA backpacks and school supplies for local children
·         Helping local families in need
·         Helping folks who have been affected by natural disasters such as earthquakes and flooding
.....and LOTS more!
We need your ideas and your help!  This activity is open to parents, students (grades 2 through 12) and teachers!  If you are community-minded and like to help others, this is the group for you! We will meet every Monday from 2:45-3:45. Please email Sarah Haun at

Booster Club

Dear Parents,

A new school year has begun and we have the wonderful opportunity to once again be a member of AASCA, the American Association of Schools in Central America. This association was formed to support and encourage academic, artistic, athletic and cultural interaction between international schools that offer a US type education in Central America. In years past, we have sent basketball teams to San José, Honduras and Panama. These tournaments were a great success, both on and off the court. Sportsmanship, camaraderie, team work as well as interaction with students from all the different countries were highlights of the trips. Many of the students will tell you participation in AASCA was the highlight of their year.

This year, CDSG will send boys and girls basketball teams to the October small school tournament to be held in San José, soccer teams to the tournament in Panama, as well as delegations to the Leadership Conference in San José and the Knowledge Bowl in El Salvador.

The students are becoming excited about the upcoming events. Teams are training and studying hard. We know that as parents you will share their excitement about these wonderful opportunities that in so many ways enrich the experience of being a student at CDSG.

The first step of making AASCA participation a reality is a financial step. Yearly AASCA membership is $3,500 and there is a $400 registration fee per team per event. The Parent Committee is generously donating $1,750 towards the membership fee. This means we need to raise $4,150 to ensure we can participate in each event. Other related costs (transportation, lodging and food) will be met by other fundraisers throughout the school year.

The CDSG Pirate Booster Club is hoping to make participation in all four events a reality this year. Our success depends on everyone in the CDSG community and we encourage every family to join the Booster Club.

Please find attached our Pirate Booster Club flyer which outlines the different levels of sponsorship and participation as well as the respective benefits to you or your company. But remember, the ultimate benefit is for the students who will have memories and learning experiences that will stay with them forever.

The deadline for donations is mid November. We are confident that we can meet and even exceed our goal of $4,150 with your support. Together we can make it happen!

Please contact me with any questions you may have or to arrange for donation pick up. Thank you for your consideration.

Kind regards,

Petra Schoep

Flu Prevention

Please remember to watch your children for any symptoms of the flu. If your child has a fever, upset stomach, or congestion please keep him/her home and consult a doctor before coming back to school. If a child has the flu he/she should be kept at home until at least 24 hours after the symptoms have gone. In the mean time we will be watching carefully and will immediately call parents to pick up any child that is showing symptoms of the flu. We are also asking the students to wash their hands regularly. Providing them with a small bottle of hand sanitizer that can be kept at school is a great idea. Thank you for your help and cooperation in this matter.

Weekend Adventures for Boarding Students Available to All Students!

Don't forget that all of our weekend activities for boarding students are also available to our day students. Watch the calendar and newsletter for upcoming trips and let us know if you would like for your child to participate. All students grades 7 and up are eligible to go. It's a great way to spend a weekend.

Emergency Phone Tree

Please be sure that Katia has your current home and cell number  to add to our Emergency Phone Tree. This is important for us in case we have an emergency announcement or school closure due to weather or other unforeseen event. This helps us to disseminate information as quickly as possible to everyone in our school community.
