CDS Guanacaste Weekly News September 5, 2008

Thanks again to all the parents who continually arrive with a smile and offers to volunteer to do things at the school and help out in the classrooms whenever we need them. I think the potential for a great school community here is the greater than I have seen anywhere that I have been since moving overseas 7 years ago. We live in a special place full of people with common ideas for living and how they want to raise their children. I’m so looking forward to how our school will continue to grow and nurture this positive and supportive environment that so benefits our children.

Junior/Senior Parent Meeting:

It is a nerve racking time for seniors and their parents. Even some juniors and sophomore might start to feel the pressure of preparing for and choosing a college. Questions about grade point averages, preparing for SAT’s, choosing the right courses, choosing the right colleges/universities to apply to, and meeting application deadlines can be overwhelming. We understand how you feel and will do our best to help you sort through the process, even without a full time certified college counselor on our staff. We do have an amazing group of teachers that are willing to help however they can. One teacher, Mark Sluzky has offered to be a part time college counselor to help students and parents sort through some of these issues. We also have the services of our Escazu campus and hope to take students to the college fair on October 13th.

We are preparing a presentation along with time for questions and answers on Wednesday, September 10th, in Mr. Sluzky’s room. We invite only the parents of 11th and 12th graders at this time.

What to do when the rains come?

Apparently the rains have come a little early this year. I am getting to know what areas are more prone to flooding. Today it was especially difficult for families to get here from Portrero, which I hear is not unusual during rainy season. Please don’t take unnecessary risks crossing flooded roadways in order to get your kids to school. If they miss school we will make accommodations for them to make up the work without penalty.

I am also looking closely at our communications and emergency response systems. The first order of business will be the phone tree. Please be sure that we have all current phone numbers and other contact information. That includes cell phones, home phones, alternate phone numbers and email addresses. It’s important that we be able to contact you as soon as possible in the event of school closure, shortening of the school day, or other emergencies.

Independence Day Festival:

Please see attachments concerning our Costa Rican Independence Day celebration next Friday. It will also be posted to our website.

Remember:

A child who does not play is not a child, but the man who doesn't play has lost forever the child who lived in him and who he will miss terribly.
