Happy Independence Day Costa Rica

Wow…I’m barely finding the time this week to write the news. As all of you know we’ve been preparing all week for the Independence Day Festival today and it is still going on as I write this. The music and the food and the dancing and the acting and the bull riding and games and amazing donations by so many different families have made the day an overwhelming success. Monica Riascos and Sam Berey did an amazing job coordinating the event, and the teachers and students all came together to present a wonderful day that brought together students, teachers, parents and children and families from throughout the community to celebrate. It was fantastic to see the grounds of Country day be filled with such joy and displaying such a great pride in Costa Rica our community.

The event also doubled as a fundraiser for our high school students who are planning a trip to Washington D.C. this spring. I think that they are off to a great start towards raising the necessary funds to make the trip. Thank you all for coming and spending your money J. I also had a wonderful time getting to know more of you. Like the song the elementary kids sing at the conclusion of every Friday’s assembly GDSG! The place to be!

Next Booster Club & Basketball Meeting

Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 in the cafetorium we will have another meeting for parents of basketball players to discuss fundraising activities for AASCA events and the basketball tournament in Panama next month. I hope to see you all there.

College Counseling Meeting

Last Wednesday we had a college counseling presentation and question and answer session for high school students and parents led by Mr. Mark Sluzky. We had a large number of students and parents and I thought the meeting was a great success. It was very informative and seemed to put to rest many of the uncertainties and concerns of the parents of our students beginning the process of choosing and applying to colleges and universities. We are truly fortunate to have such a talented and dedicated group of teachers willing to volunteer their time in the absence of a full time college counselor. Mr. Sluzky put together a terrific presentation and he, along with his wife Carol, Kim Baldwin, Brijin Hales, and Bree Goolsby, have volunteered to help students prepare for the SAT’s, search for financial aid and find the college or university that is right for each student. It is a lot of extra work for these teachers, in addition to their regular teaching, coaching and after school club activities. Please take the time to thank them and show your appreciation for all that they have offered to do for our students, your children. We have a terrific staff. Have I said that before? Sure I have, but the truth is worth repeating.

William Glasser, an American psychologist, once said “Every single major push in education has made it worse and right now it's really bad because everything we've done is de-humanizing education. It's destroying the possibility of the teacher and the student having a warm, friendly, intellectual relationship.” But that certainly isn’t true at CDSG.

Have a great holiday weekend and enjoy the dry weather while it lasts.

Mr. Haun
