Happy New Year and Thank You to

Our Amazing Support Staff!

Welcome back everyone! I hope you had a terrific New Year! We are back in full swing at CDSG. We have several new students in the high school and more will be arriving in the elementary later this semester. Lots of late inquiries have been coming in this year. As usual we will have a full plate of activities scheduled again for this semester including soccer, after school activities, a community Open House, Math Day, Curriculum Day, another Coffee House, and much more I'm sure. It's important that we keep up our reputation as the "busiest small school in Central America". I hope you all settle back in nicely to the routine of school and daily life here in paradise. Please stop by and say hello!

On a special note: Please be alert to special sales of goodies at school put out by our upper and lower school student governments in an effort to raise money for the American Red Cross.  These donations will help those in Haiti as they recover from such a devastating earthquake this week.

Happy New Year...may 2010 bring you peace and happiness!

Warmly,
Mr. Haun

We have our own teachers offering activities and also some very talented people in the area who are offering activities which they are specially trained for. Most are free but some will require a small fee to cover costs for the presenters.

Be sure to sign up early before classes close due to large enrollment. Take advantage of all of these great opportunities!
After school activity sign up sheets will be coming home with your child on Monday.  Please choose your activities, fill out the sheet and return it to your child's teacher by Friday, January 22nd.

Special Note: If any parents would like to volunteer to offer an after school activity one hour a week (especially for Pre K and kindergarten) from 2:45 - 3:45 please contact Katia at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
Thank you!

Emergency Phone Tree

Please be sure that Katia has your current home and cell number  to add to our Emergency Phone Tree. This is important for us in case we have an emergency announcement or school closure due to weather or other unforeseen event. This helps us to disseminate information as quickly as possible to everyone in our school community.

Open House

On February 25th we will be having another Open House for the entire community. We are inviting everyone in our area to come to the school between the hours of 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. in order to see the school and listen to curriculum presentations by each of our grades/classes. There will be tables set up for people to ask questions about our:

Curriculum,
SAT preparation,
College Counseling,
Meet Our Teachers,
AP Courses,
Student Government,
After School Activities,
Association of American Schools in Central America Affiliation and Activities,
Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges Accreditation,
MEP Accreditation,
Hydroponic and Organic Gardening, Community Service Projects,
Mano A Mano Projects,
A Living Museum, Scholarsips for Eligible Costa Rican Students,

and much more!

This will be our chance to showcase our school and our program. Please help us spread the word.  Feel free to invite your friends and neighbors!

Weekend Adventures for Boarding Students

Also Available to All Students!

Boarding Students traveled to Nicaragua before the holiday for a special cultural experience of markets, boats, carriages, and Nica food!

Don't forget that
all of our weekend activities for boarding students are also available to our day students. Watch the calendar and newsletter for upcoming trips and let us know if you would like for your child to participate. All students grades 7 and up are eligible to go. It's a great way to spend a weekend.

Model United Nations

If you have a son or daughter in high school please encourage him/her to be a part of the Model United Nations group that will be going to Lincoln School in San Jose later this semester to participate in an amazing event. This is a fantastic experience and a wonderful opportunity to enrich their college portfolios! See Mark Slusky or Kim Baldwin for more information.

New Hires for Next Year

Just a final note to let all parents and students know that we will be interviewing and hiring new teachers to replace any teachers that will not be returning for next year. A few teachers are leaving are leaving to pursue graduate degrees and one is leaving to pursue his own new business venture. I will be interviewing from a large applicant pool of qualified teachers from the states. I may leave for a short time to attend an international teaching job fair in the U.S. for a short time as well. If there are qualified teachers from the U.S. and canada living locally they will also be considered. As soon as I have the names of the new teachers I will send out their information to the community. Be assured that we will be fully staffed and ready to go in August. It seems that there is always a waiting list of teachers applying to live and work in paradise, of course. In this way we are fortunate to have a rather large list of excellent candidates to choose from whenever we have turnover.
